The SALC Undergraduate Scholars Programme is an extra-curricular, non-credit-bearing programme of research for intellectually adventurous undergraduate students.

It builds upon prior learning through research initiatives developed by the University and it articulates with the University’s Strategic Vision to develop World-Class Research and to create an excellent student experience.

The programme will run in semester 2 of each academic year and will be open to students of all levels. It will comprise 20 contact hours between February and June, and will require students to spend some time on independent research too. It will combine training in general and project-specific research skills with an instructor supported, but independent, and interdisciplinary research project, to be undertaken in groups comprised of undergraduates from all years and degree programmes in SALC.

Mixed level group work, interdisciplinarity, and an opportunity for students to develop their research questions, methods and mode of presentation, within the remit of an overarching research theme or project devised by staff, are distinctive characteristics of the UG Scholars programme. These features ensure that it differs significantly from other independent research work students do in the course of their degree.

If any of your students are interested in applying, they may want to talk about balancing the load of an extra-curricular project with their current work, so they may seek advice on that. They will also need a short supporting reference (it only needs to be brief!) from their Academic Advisor or Dissertation Supervisor, so they may get in touch with you to ask for that.
