Research

A vibrant community of scholars in translation, interpreting, and intercultural studies.

Research in CTIS takes advantage of the range of interests both of our core staff and of the wider research community in Modern Languages and the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures.

Our researchers focus on translation, interpreting, and intercultural communication using tools from these areas as well as working on the cutting edge of interdisciplinary scholarship that involves them. These pages provide an overview of some of our current activities.

Prospective doctoral students are encouraged to contact us if they are interested in working with us. Proposals are welcome in the areas highlighted here as major research themes, but also in other areas supported by our staff. Please send enquiries to us at ctis-phdenquiries@manchester.ac.uk.

Please note that in order to give specific guidance about a possible application, we must see a research proposal, CV, and BA and MA transcripts. We can answer general questions about the programme without these, but will not be able to give any feedback on potential topics or eligibility without a full set of materials. Information on how to prepare these materials is available online.

We also run an email listserv through which we publicize events that our Centre runs or is involved with. If you would like to be added to this list, please email Dr Henry Jones (henry.jones@manchester.ac.uk) and say that you would like to be added to the Translation and Intercultural Studies listserv. We are happy to include members of the public as well as colleagues at other institutions on this list, not only Manchester staff and students.
