British Academy International Fellowships – SALC welcomes outline applications by 12 January 2026

The next round of British Academy International Fellowships will open in January 2026 with a deadline (still to be announced) around March 2026. This highly competitive scheme aims to attract and retain emerging talent in the UK and build “a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce.”

Applicants must:

  • Have a PhD or be in the final stages of their PhD, provided that it will be completed (including viva) before the start date of the Fellowship;
  • Have no more than seven years of full-time post-PhD experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry);
  • Be working outside the UK;
  • Not hold UK citizenship.

Potential applicants should first contact their proposed mentor. In consultation with the applicant, the proposed mentor should complete the expression of interest form and submit it on behalf of the external applicant by the internal deadline of Monday, 12 January 2026.

The form should include details of the applicant's career stage, educational background, publications, and proposed project.

Applicants and mentors will be informed as soon as possible of the outcome of the internal sift. Selected applicants will then be expected to complete the full application for submission to the British Academy by the funder’s deadline.

Future Leaders Fellowships, Round 11 – Outline applications by Monday, 26 January 2026

The next round of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships will open in February 2026 with a deadline in June 2026. These Fellowships are designed to support self-identified early career researchers in the transition to ‘research independence’. There is no limit for years post-PhD but candidates will be expected to justify their early career status and explain how this major Fellowship would facilitate their transition to research independence.

The University of Manchester has an application cap of ten standard and two clinical applicants. To maximise the time available to selected candidates for preparing applications, the University will run an internal selection process.

Internal and external candidates must complete the Expression of Interest (EoI) form and return it to fellows@manchester.ac.uk by Monday, 26 January 2026. Candidates applying in the Faculty of Humanities should also cc georgia.vesma@manchester.ac.uk.

EoIs will be assessed first by a Faculty panel and subsequently by a central panel, with feedback provided for those not selected.
